MODERN ART IN PRAGUE. PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION
2025. 12. 15.
Are you a fan of contemporary creativity visiting Prague? Well, in that case let us offer you a brief guide that will show you how to experience the dynamic world of modern art in the Czech capital.
Prague is frequently praised for its rich historic and cultural heritage, but it also boasts numerous cutting-edge contemporary spaces that will satisfy anyone’s passion for the visual world.
Be it the 20th-century modernism represented by the geniuses of Van Gogh and Picasso, specific genres like Czech cubism or some bold conceptual creations of modern-day artists – you can expect plenty of delightful discoveries that will speak to both your mind and senses.
Trade Fair Palace
Located in a monumental functionalist building which is an attraction in itself, Trade Fair Palace houses such a huge artistic collection that one visit will hardly be enough to see all. In its vast halls you shall discover works by Alfons Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Frantisek Bilek, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Bohumil Kubišta and many others – international artworks alongside Czech masters.
Among the highlights is the room dedicated entirely to Picasso and a delicious display of French art, such as the famous ‘Green Field’ painting by Van Gogh, ‘Lovers’ by Renoir and fantastic works by Auguste Rodin – founder of modern sculpture.
Trade Fair Palace is part of Prague National Gallery. You will find it to the north of the city’s historical centre, in Holešovice district.
Museum Kampa
Museum Kampa, located on the charming Kampa Island, truly shines among the top contemporary galleries in Prague. Easily reachable from Malá Strana, it will be your perfect introduction to the Czech and Central European modern art scene.
The museum is based on the private collection of Jan and Meda Mládek, renowned art patrons, and features one of the world’s most comprehensive collections by František Kupka - pioneer of abstract art, as well as Czech Cubist sculptor Otto Gutfreund. Throughout the years, the Museum has hosted exhibitions showcasing such great contemporary artists as Andy Warhol, Kamil Lhotak and Karel Malich.
Kunsthalle Praha
To experience a newly established art venue in Prague, head to Kunsthalle Praha. Opened in 2022, this avant-garde gallery showcases conceptual and experimental art by both local and international artists, offering something new for each visit.
Expect a variety of refreshing and thoughtfully curated exhibitions set within a beautiful interior, along with pleasant additional amenities – a design shop, café, and bistro offering lovely views of Prague Castle.
House at the Stone Bell
Looking as if it came straight from the Middle Ages, the House at the Stone Bell is one of the most popular buildings in Old Town Square. This mid-14th century residence mesmerizes with its architectural style and is known as a likely short-term home for Elizabeth and John of Bohemia following their arrival to Prague.
Gothic ambience serves as a wonderfully contrasting backdrop for temporary exhibitions of modern art held in the Stone Bell House by Prague City Gallery. This is a great opportunity to enjoy contemporary artistic creations in ancient halls with a very special and intimate atmospere.
House at the Black Madonna
The House at the Black Madonna was the first Cubist building in Prague – before WWI began, the Czech capital was actually considered the most significant centre of Cubism movement outside Paris. Its façade will easily catch your attention: first, by the remarkable architectural form and second, by the statue of Madonna with Baby Jesus, preserved from a Baroque-era building that stood in this place before.
Go inside and you will see a delightful exhibition full of eccentric geometrical shapes: furniture, ceramics, porcelain and glass pieces created by renowned Czech masters of the genre - Pavel Janák, Rudolf Stockar, Josef Gočár and others. There is also a souvenir shop with some lovely replicas of cubist art to take home. An unmissable attraction for design buffs!
Municipal Library
Built in the 1920s, Prague Municipal Library was one of the most modern in Europe at the time. Nowadays, its exhibition spaces are used by Prague City Gallery and host various displays of Czech contemporary art.
However, the main draw of this attraction is a stunning art installation by Matej Kren called “Idiom”. It looks like an endless tower of books – an optical illusion created with the help of mirrors and symbolizing the infinity of knowledge.
You will find this quirky installation right in the entrance hall - usually, there are lots of tourists wishing to take a look inside the tower and snap a fun photo. There is no need to buy a ticket if you came just for this experience.
Art Palace
Art Palace Prague, a gallery situated in the historic building of the old Živnostenská bank, is a brand-new addition to the city’s contemporary art scene. With its elaborately designed interiors, glazed ceilings, frescoes and statues, it is a truly prestigious venue to connect with art in its various styles.
Art Palace showcases both contemporary and historical pieces from Europe and around the world. One of its most highly-rated exhibitions is “Women in Art”, celebrating the diverse artistic expression through female perspective.
